Misusing "Comprised"

What's This?

If you've been linked to this, you probably made a language mistake and whoever sent this to you cared enough to point it out. The best thing to do is read the details and see where you went wrong.

"Comprise" means "include", as it comes from the French "compris", one meaning of which is "included". So it is that "the Internet comprises (that is, includes) systems worldwide", not that "the Internet is comprised of systems worldwide".

An acceptable alternative passive form is "is composed of". "The Internet is composed of systems worldwide."

Note: Some people accept this usage as correct, but it is still considered an error by many. Use with caution.
